The Food Pantry of San Benito shared some successes and pitfalls its volunteers and directors saw in 2024, and how they hope to create a better year going forward.
Forest Walker, Pantry Owner/President, shared her goals and general ambitions for 2025.
“Our goal is to feed as many people and needy families as possible. I want to take care of San Benito and all surrounding areas that need help,” said Walker.
Walker was overjoyed to report that 2024 had a few residents who used to come to the pantry for food return to volunteer.
“They got jobs, are doing good, and want to give back to the community,” said Forest.
The food pantry serves roughly 6,000 people a month, according to Walker, averaging roughly 72,000 throughout the year.
While the pantry saw a largely successful year, some problems still linger.
“There’s always hardship here. The reason is because we don’t have an income and rely on donations. If donations are slow, then it’s bad on us,” explained Walker.
Gracious individuals and larger entities make up a lifeline for the pantry.
“The City has been good to the pantry. We’ve been here 46 years, but we can’t stop,” said Walker.
Walker encourages anyone who is able to donate, to do so through the pantry’s P.O. Box, 1246, San Benito. Walker can send receipts upon request.
“I want the people to keep coming. I don’t want them to go through any hardships. Just keep coming, and we’re going to be here for you with food,” said Walker.
The Food Pantry of San Benito is a non-profit organization that provides food for “under-income residents of San Benito,” according to their Facebook page. For more information, visit their social media or call (956) 572-0003. The pantry is located at 195 West. Adele Street, San Benito.
