RIO HONDO, TX—The Lady Bobcat Varsity Basketball Team won three games in a span of seven days, once again throttling their opponents in the process.
Their ranking among the state’s best appears worthy as the Lady Bobcats are positioned at No. 12 between Pottsboro and Lexington, according to the Texas Girls’ Coaches Association Class 3A poll.
Two wins came in District 32-3A play against Lyford (56-34 score) and IDEA Riverview (79-0 score). The Lady Bobcats also sandwiched a victory against the La Villa Lady Cardinals by a 95-34 margin.
In the Lyford game, freshmen Carlie Rodriguez scored 28 points, and Evan Ayala bucketed 17 points.
Rio Hondo sits at 15-2 for the year.
The Lady Bobcats have three games remaining before the end of the calendar year, including at home against Santa Rosa (Dec. 20) at 12 p.m., away at Raymondville (Dec. 23) at 12 p.m., and at home against IDEA Sports Park (Dec. 31) at 10:30 a.m.
Rio Hondo is coached by Victor Sauceda.
Boys earn victories
The Rio Hondo High School Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team meanwhile won two consecutive games for the second time this month, defeating St. Gertrudis Academy (50-40 score) during the last day of a tournament, and another District 32-3A contest at IDEA Riverview (49-33 score).
The Bobcats, in three games, are undefeated in district competition, good enough for first place. They are 9-9 on the season.
“I think our experience and senior leadership will lead our younger guys in staying focused,” Rio Hondo Coach Mike Alvarez said. “We talk about staying disciplined and going 1-0 every day.”
Rio Hondo has another game at Santa Rosa (Dec. 20), and home against Raymondville (Dec. 27).
“Our approach is to continue to stay focused on our goals we had at the beginning of the season. We have a big district matchup with Santa Rosa this Friday, so all our attention is on them,” Alvarez said.
