District to hold chess tourney

San Benito Consolidated Independent School District [SBCISD] will hold an official US Chess Foundation [USCF] tournament at Veterans Memorial Academy on Jan. 11. This event is part of the district’s afterschool program [ASP].

According to a district informational flyer, the event requires all contestants to be current members of the USCF. They must also bring pencils and chess boards. The registration deadline is Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025. There will not be any on-site registration or changes made on competition day. The cancellation deadline is Jan. 9, 6 p.m. There will also not be any refunds after Jan. 9.

Payment is available through cash, money orders, school checks, and purchase orders. Checks must be made payable to the San Benito CISD Program. The registration fee is $18 per student. Individual and team registration is available through the San Benito ASP website.

K-1, K-3 and K-5 boards will be provided. Coaches and sponsors may only walk their students to the playing area for the first round. Two parents per student will be allowed in with a wristband. Wristbands will be available at check-in. Coaches and sponsors must have their campus or district identification on at all times.

The K-1 division may earn trophies for the individual top ten players, medals 11-20th place, participation medals for all students, and a group trophy for the top three teams. The K-3 U600 and K-5 U800 divisions can earn individual trophies for the top ten in each section, team trophies for the top three, and medals for 11th – 12th place. The K-8U1000 may earn trophies for the top ten students and top three teams, as well as medals for eleventh to twentieth place. K-12 U1200 and K12-1200+ over divisions can earn individual trophies for the top ten in each section, and team trophies for the top three.

The San Benito ASP is an “extension of the school day.” According to their website, they work towards “learning opportunities outside of the regular school day to improve educational outcomes in academic performance, attendance, positive behavior, grade promotion, and graduation rates.”
