For the first time in the young season, the San Benito Greyhounds had a full squad competing on the basketball court and as a result, they garnered their first victory in four games.
The convincing home win Tuesday, Nov. 19 came at the expense of the Donna Redskins by a 62-25 margin.
Seniors Devan Ullueva (15 points) and Dominic Olivares (14 points) led the ‘Hounds against a Donna team that played in its season opener.
Of the 12 players on the San Benito roster, nine scored, including junior Osiel Recio’s 10 points. Seniors Peter Jackson and AD Rodriguez each contributed eight points.
The ‘Hounds went 7-of-10 from the free throw line.
“We put things together on offense really well tonight, and we just couldn’t do that as well in the previous games,” San Benito Head Basketball Coach Luis Garza said. “Now that we have our players from the football team here, we have much more help on defense, too.”
The varsity football team ended its season last Saturday, which paved the way for Garza and his coaching staff to have a full roster.
Donna’s lone lead came by a 3-2 score. The ‘Hounds then went on a 15-3 run to close out the first quarter. The scores were set up by defensive steals.
The ‘Hounds continued their defensive prowess in the second quarter, as their lead mushroomed by 20 points at the 3:39 mark.
Donna scored a lone trey just before halftime.
The win follows three consecutive losses to open the season. San Benito fell to Mission (45-37), Brownsville Rivera (54-53), and Edcouch-Elsa (59-53).
“We stayed close in those games, and honestly, I think we played well enough that we could have won a few of those,” Garza said. “Now that we have our team, we have more depth.”
The ‘Hounds will take their talents on the road for the remainder of the month. They play at Riviera this week, at Edinburg North next week, followed by a spot at the Sharyland Tournament, Nov. 29-30.
They will host Brownsville Porter, Dec. 3. Garza saw success while at Porter for more than two decades before coming to San Benito four years ago.
