Stephanie Spotts was shocked to have received a water bill from the City for over $65,000.
Like anyone would, Spotts said she was worried about the bill.
“I looked at it and then looked at it again to make sure I was reading it correctly! My heart sank! My head was spinning with questions,” said Spotts. She had to wait until the (Veterans Day) holiday weekend was over before she could do anything about the issue.
Spotts had also tried to pay her bill over the phone but was told she owed $0. She says she knew that was wrong too, and also recalled hearing from others that the City’s phone and online payment services were not working properly.
When she was finally able to contact the water district, she was told her water meter was running backward. Spotts said the meter was replaced prior to the incident.
“It has not caused any problems until now. It made no sense and when I asked them if next month’s bill would be fixed, she told me ‘They would keep an eye on it,’ and that was that,” said Spotts. She was charged $81 instead of the original $65,000.
According to the utility billing page on the San Benito City Website, the online payment option has been experiencing difficulties since Nov. 13. This includes giving customers incorrect balance or fee information.
