WESLACO, TX — The Weslaco Panthers scored two touchdowns on back-to-back offensive drives to open the third quarter to give them the 28-14 victory over the San Benito Greyhounds at Bobby Lackey Stadium, last Friday.

Weslaco earned its third consecutive win after starting the season 0-2, while San Benito is still seeking its first win of the season five games in.

The Greyhounds made the most of their opportunities that led to points, as they tied the game twice.
Trailing by a touchdown in the second quarter, San Benito capitalized on a long 14-play drive, highlighted by a pass play on fourth down deep inside Weslaco territory. The drive enabled running back Tommy Ramirez to score on an eight-yard tote four plays later.

Kicker Elias Olvera’s point after attempt put San Benito on the scoreboard with 4:26 left before halftime.
With just over a minute to play in the second quarter, San Benito defender Peter Jackson intercepted a Weslaco pass near midfield.

On offense, the Greyhounds were helped by two Panther penalties that put them at the Weslaco 10-yard line. Quarterback Tyler Ruiz then strolled untouched into the end zone. Olvera connected on another PAT to tie the game with seconds remaining.

The game got away from San Benito in the third quarter as Weslaco also used a long offensive drive to take the lead for good. The Panthers’ second half touchdowns were within three minutes of each other. All of Weslaco’s scores were on the ground.

Each team amassed at least 200 offensive yards in the game. San Benito’s main running threats were Ruiz and Ramirez, who gained more than 80 yards each.

San Benito plays an East Texas team on Friday when it hosts Carthage (4-1). Carthage beat teams like Texarkana Liberty-Eylau, Tyler Chapel Hill, and Jasper by at least 45 points in each game. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. at Bay City ISD Memorial Stadium, 400 7th Street, Bay City, TX.
