The City of San Benito held a regular meeting on Sept. 17. Mayor Pro Tempore Pedro Galvan was absent from the meeting. The invocation was delivered by City Commissioner Place One, Thomas Goodman.

The meeting opened with the San Benito Public Library receiving official accreditation from the Texas State Library and Archives Association. Deborah Morales, City Commissioner Place Two, encouraged San Benito citizens to get involved with the meeting to build a “better understanding” of the day-to-day efforts of the commission. Goodman thanked the city staff for their work post-storm.

“It doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, and I am grateful to the city staff for all the efforts being made to solve those problems in the future,” said Goodman.

Mayor Ricardo Guerra encouraged the public to take pictures of the problematic areas so the City could address them accordingly.

Public comments were opened with Eddie Loa taking the podium. Loa addressed Commissioner Pedro Galvan and his statement that he had “no idea” about the plotted easement that flooding caused. Loa also said he had copies of emails that were sent to Galvan.

“As a commissioner, he should always be there for the citizens of San Benito, and should answer any email sent to him,” said Loa.

Loa also announced that he has asked for a recall of the commission due to his suspected “injustice” on the board. He thanked Johanna Maldonado for allowing dirt on his land to counter the intense flooding.

Continuing public comments, Thomas Hereda addressed a road near his house that was being used as a shortcut. He also expressed concern about a canal behind his home that was filling up more, and had snakes and trash inside. Mike Travis thanked Goodman for the invocation and congratulated the library for its accreditation. He also thanked the city commission and general city establishments for their work. He asked for a correction on the April 2-minute transcription. Travis was recorded thanking the housing authority for mowing Gous Street. It was recorded as Gall Street.

On the consent agenda, minutes for the April 2 meeting, with requested corrections, were approved. The second and final hearing for the rezoning of a property located on South Sam Houston Boulevard and Yost Road was approved.

The temporary closure of Sam Houston Boulevard for the Sept. 19 San Benito Consolidated Independent School District Homecoming Parade was approved. A contract for election services with Cameron County for the Nov. 5 special city elections was approved.

Payment to GDJ Engineering for the drainage, water, and sewer system survey, and geographic information systems dashboard development was approved. Cornett Construction Company was approved for payment for their reconstruction of Lift Station Number Six.

Monica Rodriguez, City Planner, presented the reading of the property rezone request for a property located on Zillock Road. The property would be rezoned to support the addition of mobile homes in the area. The reading was approved by the board. The meeting was then adjourned.
