Due to the threat posed by Hurricane Beryl, this year’s ResacaFest, originally scheduled for the July 4 weekend, was postponed, but has is now rescheduled for Friday, Aug. 9 from 5-11 p.m. and rebranded as a Back to School Bash by City organizers.
The City of San Benito decided to postpone the event due to concerns posed by the unpredictable weather during the July 4 weekend, said City of San Benito Public Relations Director David Favila. The event, however, has now gained a second lease on life and rebranded as a “Back to School Bash” featuring a school supply giveaway. Entrance to the event is still free and will be held at Heavin Memorial Park, located in the heart of the Resaca City.
The lineup for the musical acts is currently being finalized. Vendor applications are still open but are extremely limited as of the time of this story. The school supply giveaway is in partnership with the San Benito Police Department, according to Favila.
The cook-off will be held earlier in the day, starting at 7 a.m. and concluding at 4 p.m. The event will have five categories: pork ribs, chicken, fajitas, charro beans, and pan de campo.
Meeting and meat inspections with the teams will take place at 7 a.m. The first tournament will be charro beans at 11 a.m. Pan de Campo, the official bread of Texas, will be held at noon. Fajita competition is at 1 p.m., the chicken competition is slated at 2 p.m., and pork ribs will be judged at 2 p.m. Awards will be given at 4:30 p.m. First-fifth place will be awarded.
Event organizer Eddie Tapia encourages the public to “come out and enjoy the day with their friends and family,” especially if they have not experienced a cook-off.
Those who wish to enter the competition have until the day of the competition, Aug. 9 at 8 a.m. to enter what is being dubbed as a “backyard cook-off” because it is open for anyone to enter. There are spots for 25 teams. Competitors can choose between the meats category, including pork ribs, fajita, and chicken, for $150 each. The “jackpot” category entry fee is $25 per entry, including the charro beans and Pan De Campo.
The chicken cannot be shredded, pulled or garnished. Cuts must be as follows: legs, thighs, breast chicken.
Wingtips are also allowed. The pork ribs can be St. Louis cut or full spare; they must be bone-in and individually cut, according to Tapia. Garnish is not allowed on the ribs.
Checks for the entry fee and vendor spots can be made payable to the City of San Benito. No personal checks will be accepted on the day of the contest. Interested parties can call or text Eddie Tapia at (956) 874-9920, or email him at eddie.tapia64@gmail.com.
