According to Cameron County Sheriff Eric Garza, on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at about 8:30 p.m., Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the corner of FM 732 and Calle Paloma in the San Benito area regarding a welfare concern.
Responding deputies were informed that a male subject was claiming he was being chased down by the cartel and was involved in an accident.
According to a Cameron County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) report, upon arrival, sheriff’s deputies made contact with witnesses who advised them that a male subject was screaming while on their property.
According to the report, deputies observed a male subject, identified as Juan Manuel Gonzalez, walking out of a brushy area and noticed he had minor lacerations on his body and face, and appeared to be disoriented.
Gonzalez informed the responding deputies that his girlfriend was still in the area and had been involved in the crash. Deputies reportedly conducted a pat down of Gonzalez’s body and allegedly discovered a clear plastic baggie containing a white rock-like substance.
According to the report, deputies tested the substance, which allegedly resulted positive for cocaine. Thereafter, deputies made contact with Gonzalez’s girlfriend who accused Gonzalez of allegedly assaulting her. The female subject said Gonzalez allegedly slapped and pushed her to the ground, causing her pain.
The female subject also informed deputies that Gonzalez took away her cellular phone while she was attempting to call 911 due to the alleged assault.
Sheriff’s deputies arrested Gonzalez and transported him to the Cameron County, Carrizales Rucker Detention Center in Olmito pending arraignment.
Gonzalez was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance; PG 1, HSC 481.115, a State Jail Felony Assault, Dating Violence, TPC: 22.01, a Class “A” Misdemeanor, and Interference with Emergency Request for Assistance, TPC: 42.062, also a Class “A” Misdemeanor.
