Citing years of community volunteerism, and relatively recent experience as school board trustee, former San Benito CISD School Board Member Victor Eloy Rosas announced his intent to regain a seat on the San Benito CISD Board of Trustees in this coming May election.
In a prewritten statement, Rosas, who’s running for Pl. 2 on the board, currently held by Mario Silva, noted that he attended Southmost College and TSTI, where he acquired a degree in A/C and Refrigeration. He was later an instructor at TSTI, a vocational school.
Additionally, he was a firefighter for 30 years while teaching classes on air conditioning and refrigeration along with trucking. He also taught firefighters as a continuing education instructor in Harlingen and was employed by Sears as an assistant technician.
Citing his extensive community involvement, Rosas said he spent two years as a Miller Jordan Band Booster, and four years as a San Benito Band Booster where he served as booster club president all four of those years. He also assisted raising money and organizing high school scholarships for five years and volunteered with quarterback club to raise money for scholarships, noting that they raised $10,000 for 10 qualified students.
“Along with parents, we built a storage unit for our supplies. Also, we purchased a new icemaker, golf cart, and refrigerators,” he remarked.
During his tenure with the booster club, they invited a Dallas Cowboy player to speak at the quarterback football banquet. As president of the City of San Benito’s Special Events Board, the board invited several musical acts for the City’s Fourth of July celebration; bought fireworks, and encouraged students to participate in all events.
While on the Special Event’s Board, the committee led the effort to reorganize the Christmas parade, and bringing the circus to town; and as a chairperson of the San Benito Housing Authority Board, he was appointed by three different mayors.
“The elderly were very happy that we provided music, dances, games, and provided Thanksgiving dinner,” he recalled of his time on the Housing Authority board.
As a past San Benito CISD Board Trustee, Rosas was involved in the Superintendent’s Committee and designated several schools as academies.
His tenure also saw the remodeling of baseball stadium., the installation of air conditioning units to the restrooms, ordered that the outside gyms be covered, fenced all the campuses for security, installed TV screens for announcements, and initiated schools monitors outdoors.
Other volunteer work has included time as a Pan American Golf member, and scholarship fundraiser. He lauds his efforts to promote golfing lessons to students from all over the Valley and his volunteer work at the San Benito Food Pantry.
The candidate received an award for his efforts with the SBHA at the national level. He’s also been recognized at conferences, and for volunteering with the Special Olympics as a five-year volunteer at San Benito High School.
Presently, Rosas is Vice President and Treasurer of the Texas Heritage Independent Celebrations, which annually reenacts the Battle of the Alamo and Gonzalez.
Rosas is married to Cindy Tagle Rosas and has a daughter, Ryan Lynn, who is presently an educator in Houston.
