Lopez awaits Democratic victor

State Representative Janie Lopez, who currently serves House District 37 in the Texas House of Representatives, declared her candidacy for re-election this past fall, backed by the endorsement of Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

Governor Abbott announced his support for Representative Lopez alongside 58 additional members of the Texas House, praising their instrumental role in advancing critical legislation during the previous legislative session. Representative Lopez, an educator and mental health professional, said that she is committed to continuing her efforts to address the needs of Cameron and Willacy counties.

Reflecting on her achievements during her first term in office, Representative Lopez emphasized her dedication to delivering tangible results for her constituents. She cited accomplishments such as securing historic property tax relief, increasing funding for border security, and advocating for parental empowerment in education. Notably, Representative Lopez authored or co-authored over a dozen bills that were signed into law by Governor Abbott.

One of Representative Lopez’s significant legislative initiatives is House Bill 4742, which calls for a study on artificial drainage systems by the Texas Water Development Board. This legislation lays the groundwork for future funding to address flood mitigation efforts in House District 37, addressing a critical concern for constituents in the region.

As a lifelong resident of Cameron County, Representative Lopez said she remains deeply committed to serving the needs of her community, further emphasizing the importance of collaboration and dialogue with constituents in identifying and implementing solutions to local challenges.

With Governor Abbott’s endorsement and a track record of legislative accomplishments, Representative Lopez said she is poised to earn voters’ support again as she seeks re-election to represent House District 37 in the Texas House of Representatives.

Lopez, elected in November 2022, holds the distinction of being the second Hispanic Republican female elected in Texas and the first in South Texas.

Her diverse professional background includes experience as a teacher, school counselor, and mental health professional. Currently residing in San Benito, Representative Lopez brings a wealth of expertise and a deep commitment to public service to her role in the Texas House of Representatives, reads her official online biography.

Lopez is unchallenged in the March 5, 2024 Republican Primary and will face the winner of Democratic Primary in the November 2024 General Election.

The Democratic slate for District 37 State Rep. includes former District 37 State Rep. Alex Dominguez, who surrendered his seat upon redistricting prior to the last election. Dominguez is an attorney from La Feria.

Also on the ballot for the Democrats is current San Benito Commissioner and attorney Carol Lynn Sanchez, Brownsville attorney and former Port Isabel Economic Development Director Johnathan Gracia and former Brownsville ISD Board Trustee Ruben Cortez.

Texas House District 37 encompasses all of Willacy County, including the cities of Raymondville, Lyford, and San Perlita. The District also comprises much of Cameron County, including the cities of Bayview, Combes, Harlingen, Indian Lake, Laguna Vista, Los Fresnos, Palm Valley, Port Isabel, Primera, Rancho Viejo,

Rangerville, Rio Hondo, South Padre Island and parts of Brownsville, La Feria, and San Benito.
Early voting commences on February 20, 2024, and continues through March 1, 2024.
