BROWNSVILLE, TX—Parts of rural Cameron County, including local outskirt communities, have been earmarked as part of an effort to improve digital connectivity in the County’s more remote and technologically underserved areas.
In a landmark decision, the Cameron County Commissioners Court recently approved a groundbreaking partnership with internet provider VTX-1, marking a crucial step towards bridging the digital divide in the region.
The initiative, prompted by the stark challenges brought to light during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to county leaders, aims to ensure that affordable broadband services become accessible to all Cameron County residents.
According to a press release provided by the county, the comprehensive agreement with VTX-1 encompasses professional grant writing services, strategically targeting grants exceeding $100 million dedicated to broadband expansion.
A significant aspect of the partnership is the commitment to providing a baseline of minimum speeds at 100/50 Mbps, all offered at $30 monthly. What’s more, qualifying low-income households will have the opportunity to seek reimbursement through the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), potentially covering the entire service fee.
In an effort to swiftly kickstart the broadband expansion, VTX-1 has agreed to self-fund the installation of broadband infrastructure within 120 calendar days.
