On Thursday, September 28, 2023, the San Benito Chamber of Commerce hosted El Sabor de San Benito to showcase local restaurants. Eleven local restaurants provided samples of the foods they offer at decorated booths matching the Fiesta theme. At $25 a ticket, attendees tried samples from each booth and then voted on Best Dessert, Most Festive, and Best Restaurant.

By featuring their Mini Pink Champagne Cupcakes, Mini Banana Nut Muffins, and Mini Walnut Brownies, Main Street Boutique and Bistro took home the trophy for Best Dessert. Main Street, which first opened in San Benito in March of 2020, initially started its bistro side as a way to attract business to its boutique. They are now located in Harlingen but still want to participate in San Benito community events whenever possible and consider opening a second location in San Benito in the future.

According to owners Angela and Esteban Rodriguez, many of their San Benito friends have stopped by their restaurant to enjoy their Main Street Club sandwich, Turkey Bacon Avocado Panini, karaoke, great ambiance, and their other family and classic recipes in the few days following the event last Thursday.

The Rodriguezes “would like to thank the San Benito Chamber for putting on a wonderful event, and a special thanks to all who voted; many amazing businesses participated, and we were honored to be among them.”

Pappasitos, which took home the Most Festive and Best Restaurant trophies, could not be reached for comment.

Chamber Director Cathy Weaver explained the idea for the event came from the Chamber Board of Directors, who wanted to promote some of the restaurants San Benito has to offer, but in a fun way. As the director, Weaver says that creativity is an important part of the position and that thinking outside the box is necessary to create posts and events that interest the community. In this way, the Chamber can accomplish its goal of helping all businesses succeed.
