BROWNSVILLE, TX —After a hard fought victory in Week 1, where they seemed to lose some steam in the second half, the San Benito Greyhound Varsity Football Team put together one of the most complete blowouts in school history this past Thursday.
A visit to Sams Stadium in Brownsville for a rematch with the Pace Vikings ended with a 58-0 whooping by the ’Hounds, improving their record to 2-0. San Benito has now beaten Pace by a combined score of 107-0 over the last two seasons.
The Greyhounds surprised some fans last week by refusing to throw a single pass the entire game, but that was not the case this week as Aaron Corona threw a ten-yard pass on the first play of the game. After five running plays split between star running backs Fabian Garcia and Atticus De Leon, Corona threw a 26-yard laser to Garcia in the back of the endzone for a quick 7-0 lead.
The blowout got underway quick as Karmyne Castilleja forced a fumble on the Vikings’ second offensive play that was recovered by senior defensive back Brandon Hernandez. Some hard running by Aaron Garza got San Benito down to the two-yard line where Garcia came in and punched the ball in for his second touchdown of the quarter. With the first quarter winding down, Pace looked ready to finally make some noise with two quick first downs, but the success was short lived. Defensive back Jonathan Aquino intercepted a deep pass attempt and managed to take it back 40 yards for another San Benito touchdown.
The Greyhounds took a 21-0 lead and momentum into the second quarter.
Still struggling to get the ball to midfield, Pace had another promising drive going before Castilleja picked up a big time sack, bringing up third and long from its own 40-yard-line. Desperate to pick up a first down, the Vikings called another deep pass, but Hernandez made his second splash play of the game, coming down with an interception. More hard running by Garza got the ball inside the five yard line where De Leon bulldozed his way for another score. By the end of the first half, the Greyhounds boasted a commanding 35-0 lead with Pace all but surrendering the game.
Looking rejuvenated after the break; the Vikings came out on offense to start the third quarter and immediately picked up a first down. The Greyhound defense, however, stiffened up and forced a punt before Pace could get past the 40-yard line. It took just three plays for Garza to find the endzone again, pushing the score to 41-0.
