Closing in on two months since the San Benito City Commission terminated City Manager Manuel De la Rosa, the role is now being filled by a second interim employee.
Despite the uncertainty in one of their top positions, the Commission is attempting to move forward with a “business as usual” approach. Business continued with a regularly scheduled commission meeting last week where the group of City leaders discussed everything from shaking up the EDC board to approving payment for work done on failing lift stations and even an executive session to determine compensation for the new Interim City Manager.
The commission meeting got started by allowing public comment, as all meetings do, and Edith Tamez took advantage of that opportunity. Tamez, a leader for the advocate group “Furry Friends”, used the platform to ask commissioners for help obtaining fans for the animal shelter to help cool down the animals.
“It’s kind of a carport facility and there is no a/c so I wanted to ask if it was possible to get some fans or maybe one big fan to help combat this record heat,” said Tamez. “If there is any way we have the funds to help them get through these next few weeks, it would be greatly appreciated.”
While no action can be taken immediately after public comment, Mayor Rick Guerra acknowledged the issue would be looked into in the near future.
Next up, Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Coordinator Martin Saenz addressed the second of two required public hearings for the new fiscal year annual action plan.

The mayor can barely speak English or have a educated conversation without stuttering. So looking into it means nothing will get done.
