With just over a month before the start of the new school year, the San Benito athletic department will be tasked with replacing a productive and beloved coach after a rival school stole away one of the longest tenured employees of the purple and gold.

Balde Olivarez III, the head varsity Greyhound wrestling coach and track assistant, announced that he will be making the move to Harlingen High School for the 2023 campaign. Olivarez helped bring the wrestling program back to prominence with three straight top three district finishes and over 20 regional qualifiers over the last two seasons. A San Benito native, Olivarez has worked for SBCISD since 2000 with a brief stop as a softball coach at Harlingen South in 2015.

“It was an incredibly difficult decision that I had to think about for a long while,” said Olivarez. “My heart will always be in San Benito, and I’m thankful for the opportunities I had while working in my hometown. This is the best decision for my son and my family, and I’m looking forward to continuing making a positive impact on the kids I coach.”
