LOS FRESNOS—The Narciso Martinez Cultural Arts Center (NMCAC) and the City of Los Fresnos, announced the line-up for the Center’s 2023 Summer Conjunto Program to begin June 25, 2023, and conclude on September 1, 2023.
The itinerary will include six conjunto music presentations. The presentations include conjunto documentaries, speakers, as well as two live conjunto musical events. The schedule is as follows:• June 25, 2023, 2-4 p.m. “Los Del Valle: Narciso Martinez and Valerio Longoria,” Los Fresnos City Hall, 520 E. Ocean Blvd., Los Fresnos; Speaker: Dr. Manuel Medrano, UTRGV Historian and producer of “Los Del Valle”;
• July 9, 2023, 2-4 p.m. Documentary, “Songs of the Homeland” (1995) by Hector Galan, Los Fresnos City Hall;
• July 23, 2023, 2-4 p.m. Documentary “Accordion Dreams” (2001) by Hector Galan, Los Fresnos City Hall;
• August 4, 2023, 7-10 p.m. “Conjunto Meets Cajun Music,” live presentation by Charles Thibodeaux and the Austin Cajun Aces and the Laureles Chicken Club, the Los Fresnos Community Center, 200 N Brazil St, Los Fresnos;
• August 20, 2023, 2-4 p.m. Documentary, “Chulas Fronteras” (1976) by Chris Strachwitz, Los Fresnos City Hall;
• September 1, 2023, 7-10 p.m. Live Music Conjunto Jam, Los Fresnos Community Center.
The NMCAC is dedicated to the preservation, promotion and development of the rich, cultural heritage of the Mexican American community in the visual arts, music, theater, dance and literary works.
The Center, as it is known and referred to by many, opened its doors in San Benito on Tuesday, October 29, 1991 with a performance by Narciso Martinez on his 80th birthday; he played to a standing room crowd.
