Just days after their historic season came to an end in the State Semi-Final game, the Lady ’Hounds received one last shot of unprecedented recognition. The 32-6A All-District selections were announced late last week and a total of ten Lady ’Hounds were honored on the list with everything from league MVP to First-Team All-District.
San Benito was so dominant, league officials decided to split the District MVP award between three different Lady ’Hounds players. Senior pitcher/slugger Emily Delgado, sophomore sensation Amira Rodriguez and University of Houston commit Bethany Aguilar split the MVP award in a district first. All three players were instrumental to the team’s success according to Head Coach Elias Martinez.
“Everything from their leadership to their play on the field to their effort in the classroom was really special this season,” said Martinez. “It was an honor to coach all three of those girls and the bar that they set is something we will continue to adhere to.”
In addition to MVP, San Benito nabbed the Offensive Player of the Year with sophomore catcher Jozanna Montes earning the honor. Montes was one of the most consistent hitters in the Valley this year with several timely homeruns to her credit.
“[Montes] was so consistent this year and yet she still has room to grow,” Martinez said. “She’s going to be another real special player over the next two years, and we expect many more awards for her going forward.”
The last of the special superlatives went to senior Mia Gonzalez who was named Designated Player of the Year after an outstanding season hitting the ball. Gonzalez delivered in the clutch repeatedly during the season and into the playoffs.
