After one of the most spectacular playoff performances in recent memory, sophomore Amira Rodriguez was recognized on a national level. Scorebook Live, one of the top prep sports websites in the United States, held a national vote for player of the week and Rodriguez won in a landslide garnering more than 68% of the 16,000 votes in a 20-person race.
Rodriguez earned the honor after a heroic three-game playoff series against New Braunfels in which the sophomore drilled two grand slams while also looking like the best pitcher on either team.
“Being able to come through for my teammates is what meant the most to me in that moment,” said Rodriguez. “All I was thinking about was doing whatever was needed to get the win… I’m thankful for the support of my team and the community and I’m going to be working harder than ever this off-season to make sure I can come through again when my moment comes.”
While the two grand slams undoubtedly caught most people’s attention, Rodriguez has been one of the most well-rounded players in Texas all season. As a batter, she was one of the most consistent hitters on the team and actually led the district in extra-base hits. A two-year starter, Rodriguez is already one of the most accomplished players in school history despite having two more years of eligibility.
