A fugitive wanted for a 1997 Rio Hondo murder was located and arrested earlier this week.
According to the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), on May 1, 2023, Border Patrol Agents from the Rio Grande City area located Benito Barrera Martinez as he tried to enter the country illegally.
A check of his identifiers revealed that he had an outstanding warrant from the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office for the offense of murder.
The outstanding warrant had been issued for the arrest of Martinez in 2014 for a charge of 1st Degree Murder.
Martinez was initially indicted for murder in 2006 and was incarcerated but later released when the 2006 case was dismissed. New evidence prompted a new case in 2014 but Martinez couldn’t be located.
Martinez is being charged in the murder of 29-year-old, Martin Villarreal.
