While early season success brought sky-high expectations for the Greyhound baseball team, a four-game skid to close out the regular season set up San Benito for a tough bi-district playoff series.

By finishing in fourth place in 32-6A, the Greyhounds draw the 31-6A champion PSJA Bears in Round 1. The Bears have been one of the best teams in the Valley this season and contrast San Benito’s four-game losing streak with a five-game winning streak of their own.

The Greyhounds looked unstoppable in the early season, capturing multiple tournament championships and putting together a seven-game winning streak at one point. Entering the final two weeks of the season, San Benito was in second place in its district and was challenging for a district championship. Four straight losses, including two shutouts, to end the season cost the Greyhounds their third consecutive winning district season.

“We wanted to close out the season strong, but that just didn’t happen,” said third-year head coach Ram Partida. “The talent is there and our guys have enough experience so I think we can get it done. I have all the confidence in the world in our team.”

PSJA put together an impressive 19-5 overall record this season with a sterling 10-1 district record. The Bears have won 14 of their last 15 games and averaged just over nine runs per game. While its hitting has been spectacular, PSJA’s defense has just been just as critical to its success.
