The City of San Benito Commissioner’s meeting on Tuesday kicked off with a comment from Mayor Rick Guerra asking for mindfulness from political candidates whose signs are blocking drivers’ view of oncoming traffic.
During the Public Comment section, Commissioner Pete Galvan also stood before the board to discuss the issue. He said he noticed one sign blocking the right-of-way after exiting Cabo Bar & Grill. Galvan said he called TxDOT about the issue and relayed their message that TxDOT right-of-way is everything from the utility line to the street.
“This is a message to all candidates at the City and school district that we need to be cognizant of the wording you have on your own sign that states ‘I will not block TxDOT right of way,’” Galvan said. “That’s just an accident waiting to happen, there’s already accidents happening just with the construction that’s going on.”
In other public comments, Erin Tamez expressed concern about abandoned pets in the city and asked how the City could improve its animal control budget, perhaps through a 25-cent fee to the water bill of which funds will go towards shelters.
Next up was Adan Oceguera, who mentioned the chemical spill train derailment in Ohio. He requested that San Benito, having many train tracks and a resaca, take a look at its emergency procedures and rail safety. Furthermore, he praised the efforts taken for improvements to public housing.

I’ve noticed some candidates Political Signs with RAINBOW colors. Unusual for OUR neck of the woods. Which leads to to ask a question, WHEN SHOULD WE EXPECT DRAGQUEEN reading ours for our your children? I’m JUST saying.
