On Tuesday, March 8, the San Benito CISD School Board of Trustees discussed issues imperative to the upcoming school year.
Beginning with their Curriculum Committee meeting, the board began by approving the district’s health science affiliations for CNA’s and Pharmaceutical Technicians with the following centers: Black Ridge Canyon Healthcare LLC DBA Treasure Hills Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Starr County Hospital District, DBA Harlingen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy, Care RX, Salinas Pharmacy, Harlingen Pharmacy, Fry’s Prescription and Walgreens Pharmacy.
The board also then compared two drafts for next year’s school year calendar, which included 172 days of student instruction. Both had the first and last days of school in common as well as dates for standardized testing. The differences included new teacher orientation and staff development.
Family and Community Engagement Department Director Luis Gonzalez mentioned that teachers were adamant about adding more workdays before both summer and winter breaks in order to setup their classrooms and prepare for instruction.
The district is also looking to implement San Benito CISD Staff Learning days, which will be designated as stops during the years to evaluate staff development or training, in which students would be off. Those dates would land on four Fridays as follows: Sept. 22, 2023, Oct. 27, 2023, Jan. 26, 2024, and Feb.23, 2024.
The calendars will be up for a vote with teachers and staff.
Up next was the Building Committee, which focused first on the 3,739 feet of fencing for Berta Cabaza Middle School, costing a total cost of $108,091 to be completed by Hurricane Fencing.
“There’s some misconception in the community that [safety] has already been taken care of, and evidently not. We’re spending additional funds,” said Board President Ramiro Moreno. “Just so the community and people here are aware, we continue to improve the safety of our campuses and by no means were we done way back when.”
