Despite essentially sneaking into the playoffs with a 5-5 district record, the San Benito Lady ’Hounds can now add a Bi-district championship to their trophy case.
With a stunning 66-47 blowout of La Joya, who finished second in their district with an 8-2 record, San Benito is on to its third Area Championship game under longtime Head Coach Abel Moreno.
It was a hard-fought victory for the Lady ’Hounds, set up by stellar play from superstar sophomore Angelina Reyes. As she has most of the season, Reyes led San Benito in scoring while the suffocating team defense of the ’Hounds was too much for La Joya to overcome.
“It was a great team performance by this group of girls, and I couldn’t be more proud of the way they competed through all four quarters,” said Moreno. “Our goal from the very start of the season was to win an Area Championship so there’s no doubt in my mind that these girls are ready.”
In what will be a quick turnaround after their Bi-District Championship on Tuesday night, the Lady ’Hounds will be hoping to get over the hurdle of the second round when they clash with Laredo United on Friday, Feb. 18 in Corpus Christi.
