The release of San Benito CISD’s independent forensic audit compiled by Weaver and Tidwell L.L.P. showed to the new school board and district community that there were issues with the practices of the previous board and Superintendent Nate Carman.
Among these issues were paying companies tens of thousands of dollars for work beforehand or without showing any results. Other issues included no documentation on certain matters, lack of transparency, awarding construction contracts without going through the bidding process, not following procedures; and, in some cases, going against the Texas Government Code.
Current board trustee Orlando Lopez, who was on the board under Carman, and later named board president, commented to the NEWS that despite his support for Carman in the previous administration, he voted in favor of the audit.
“I thought it would be a fair topic across the board, and of course, no board is perfect, there’s always room for improvement,” he said. “But I think a lot of the information that was presented was skewed in a negative manner.”
When asked his opinion on the criminal investigation that trustee Janie Lopez expressed support for in media reports, Orlando mentioned that he asked if any procurement laws were broken during last week’s Special Meeting, to which the answer was no.
