Election Day is less than 40 days away and voter turnout is expected to be high.

Remi Garza, the elections administrator in Cameron County, said more than 206,000 people have registered to vote and the last day to do so is Oct. 11. He also said early voting will be held from Monday, Oct. 24, through Friday, Nov. 4.

Garza said all voting locations have been finalized but added a new polling place has been added. That is at the San Ignacio de Loyola Iglesia Catolica in El Ranchito, a town along Highway 281 southeast of San Benito. He made the announcement during Tuesday’s Sept, 27 meeting of the Cameron County Commissioners’ Court.

In other business, the commissioners heard an update of the county’s five year road maintenance plan. The $2.9 million plan covers 28.4 miles of county roads, out of which more than $1.6 million have been spent. All the road works in Precinct 1 and 2 have been completed but plenty of work is still pending in Precincts 4 and 5.

The commissioners approved naming a county’s sheriff’s administration building in Olmito in honor of former Sheriff Omar Lucio who died in January of this year at the age of 88. A San Benito native, Lucio who began his law enforcement career in 1962 was elected to county sheriff in 1967.
