A fence to keep the native wildlife out of the perimeter of the Cameron County Airport is up and is keeping the unwanted critters out.

The 5.1-mile game fence was built with county and state funds from the Texas Department of Transportation Aviation Division.

County and state and area officials met on Thursday, Sept. 15 inside the airport hangar to dedicate the structure built at a cost of $1.4 million.

“This is a project that has been long overdue,” David Garza, commissioner with Precinct 3, said. “We wanted a new fence and needed a partner for that.”

However, he said once the funding came from TxDOT, the fence went up.

The reason for the fence is aviation safety, especially at nighttime, Garza added. The airport is surrounded with native brush which is the perfect habitat for white-tailed deer, nilgae antelope and feral hogs. Garza said not a single incident has been reported since the fence was completely built, about a month ago.

Eddie Trevino Jr., the county judge, said the airport is a big asset today and for future development.
