Trustees address salary concerns

San Benito CISD Interim Superintendent Theresa Servellon is earning $800 per day, a pay rate that has raised some concerns among other board members, who said they had not been informed clearly about the decision.

“Personally, I was surprised that the amount was significantly different than what was initially presented to the board,” said Trustee Ariel Cruz. “Due to the large discrepancy in the final amount, I would have hoped that the negotiations were more transparent and had been brought back to the board for a final vote.”
Much of the controversy lies in the reports of former Superintendent Nate Carman making only $500 a day during his first year in office.

“It was brought to our attention because Dr. Carman came in with four and a half years of Superintendent experience, and he was making less than Servellon is right now,” said trustee Orlando Lopez, who voted against Servellon’s hiring and against giving Moreno the authority to negotiate her contract.

“The attorney did not send us a copy of the contract. We had to hear about it from the community. I guess the general council put the contract on the website, but honestly, they never shared the contract with the board,” Lopez said.
