The San Benito Greyhounds are headed to the playoffs for the second straight year after compiling their most total wins in over a decade. The team ended with a 9-5 district mark; good enough for third place in District 32-6A and sets up a best-of-three- playoff series with the Edinburg Vela Sabercats (20-8, 13-3) over the weekend.
The Greyhounds will be hoping for a different fate than the Lady ’Hounds softball squad, who were bounced in the first round after falling 1-0 to the PSJA North Lady Raiders. Though the Lady ’Hounds did better than most expected – PSJA North was riding a 17 game winning streak – the Greyhounds are ultimately hoping to emerge victorious in their Bi-District championship bout.
The Sabercats have been phenomenal all season, winning over 71% of their games, but they’ve been arguably the best team in the Valley since mid March. Vela has won 12 straight games and 14 of their last 15 while putting up a whopping 172 runs over that span.
The team has no glaring weaknesses as six different players finished with at least a .300 batting average and one home run while their top three pitchers finished with a 17-2 record.
