The Boys & Girls Club of San Benito recently added a mural inside its campus as something for the children to feel proud of and take pictures with.
On-site Director Kat Torres began painting the mural on the second week of April and finished last Thursday. She would remain at the Club after hours from 6-10 p.m. to paint the mural.
“I just didn’t want it to be a three-week project,” Torres said. “It was just an idea that came to mind, and we got it rolling before we had any trouble stopping.”
Before becoming director during the pandemic, Torres was a youth developer in charge of arts and crafts, where her passion lies. Before she graduated from Rio Hondo High School, she also painted a mural on the school’s grounds.
Now she is in charge of the Club’s day-to-day operation, from forms to bills to keeping grants up to date, and ensuring that when the kids arrive, they have fun from opening to closing.
Torres said they are indeed planning more murals for the future and will begin work on them as soon as the construction on their pavilion and maintenance being done to the main room is completed.
“I just want to wait a couple of weeks till our floors are done and then we’ll get started on another mural, and possibly with the kids helping me so they can be a part of it,” Torres said.
In other club news, the club held an Easter party and hunt last week with over 3,000 eggs for the club members to hunt, games, lots of food and fun for club members.
