Harley detailer gives new life to Freddy Fender’s bike

Special to the NEWS

When Freddy Fender rode his Harley Davidson motorcycle, he was living his dream. He was at the top of his career; he’d won two Grammys and earned two Gold Records. He played his vintage Fender guitar and rode a top-of-the-line motorcycle, a Harley Davidson.

For 16 years after his death, his Harley has resided in San Benito, featured in the San Benito Museums located in the Community Building showcasing the history of San Benito, the Conjunto Hall of Fame, and the Freddy Fender exhibit.

In preparation for a private tour of the museum, which has been closed on order from the city for two years, Freddy’s motorcycle received a top-to-bottom detail job from San Benito’s Harley Davidson’s top detailer, Jesse (IBM) Martinez, who gladly offered to work on the bike free of charge when he heard about it.

“Of course I’ll do it,” said Martinez when Sandra Tumberlinson, the treasurer of the Historical Society approached him saying, “We have no money to pay for the job.”

San Benito native, Martinez brought all his tools, polishes, and air compressor to work on the motorcycle while volunteers realigned and dusted Freddy’s memorabilia on the walls, listening to stories about the famous singer while videos of Freddy’s life played on the flat screen TV mounted opposite the motorcycle.
