Lady ’Hounds hoping for late season surge

With just a handful of games remaining in the season, the San Benito Lady Greyhound Varsity Softball Team is currently sitting in fourth place in District 32-6A. While the team has been dominant at times, winning the last two games by a combined score of 26-3, a fourth place district finish would ultimately be a letdown for the fan base and players alike.

While the return of former head coach Elias Martinez definitely raised the excitement of the community, with each home game featuring overflowing bleachers, the results have been mixed. In addition to their dominance over the last two games, the Lady ’Hounds have compiled a whopping 12 shutout victories in just 20 games this season, however, the team is just 4-4 in games where they have failed to pitch a shutout. According to Martinez, this has been an expected result.

“We knew our coaching staff wasn’t going to come in here and get to where we want to be in half a season,” said Martinez. “We’re trying to change the culture and that takes time. We still have to make the playoffs; and, then, hopefully, we can make a run.”

While San Benito has proven to be a formidable team, boasting a 16-4 overall record, it is in easily the toughest district in the Valley. The Lady ’Hounds will almost certainly claim one of the four playoff spots, but it will be hard for the Lady ’Hounds to move up the rankings as three teams – Los Fresnos, Harlingen South, and Weslaco – are currently tied for first place with a 5-1 district mark.
