Earlier this month, it was reported that the San Benito commission had approved the request of Henry Thomae rent and maintain a small portion of property known to the community as the San Benito municipal airport. While the commission did authorize further discussion on the matter, they had not fully approved the request set forth by Thomae. At the time, the 53-year-old Thomae had offered to pay $750 per month in rent while also taking out a $2 million insurance policy. Since that commission meeting on August 2, discussions have been ongoing between Thomae and the city commission. Now, according to Thomae, it seems like the two sides are any second from formally agreeing on the approval.
“Things are looking good for South Texas Raceway,” wrote Thomae. “The city manager is recommending the insurance that I proposed so we might have a racetrack after all.”
The development comes four months after Thomae gave his initial presentation to the commission, which was denied. At the time, Thomae had only offered a $1 million insurance policy, which he believed was more in line with what racetracks from across the state were accustomed to.
