Despite coming off a brilliant season that saw them reach their second state tournament in the last three years, and fall painfully short of a shot at the state championship, the San Benito Lady ’Hounds still entered this season with more questions than answers. The team graduated a solid core of players, had no idea who their pitcher would be, and would be under the leadership of a new coach for the first time since Bill Clinton was president.
These same questions that people in the local community had in the back of their minds managed to reach all the way to Oregon, where MaxPreps National Softball Editor Tom Mauldin keeps tabs on virtually every softball team in the Nation. For Mauldin, reaching the final four in the highest classification in the State of Texas two out of three years was enough to get him to take notice. However, he still needed to see a little more before placing the young team with the top schools in the country.
