San Benito and Harlingen police officers were both on scene at the Valero off Sam Houston Boulevard and the frontage road Tuesday night after a suspect fled on foot.

According to a press release issued by the San Benito Police Department, 23-year old Luis Vargas was apprehended around 10:30 p.m. after officers noticed a vehicle matching the description of one involved in an aggravated assault in Harlingen involving a firearm.

When police made contact with Vargas, who was pumping gas at the Valero, he fled on foot and was apprehended after a brief struggle where a chemical deterrent was used to gain compliance, the press release stated.
