For a briefly heated moment at the City Commission meeting Tuesday night, it appeared as if the youth baseball/softball league in San Benito would be no-more.
Already a month behind schedule, an emotional S.B.Y.B.S.L. President Omar Gonzalez stood up and addressed the Commission with a handful of major contract concerns that nearly called for the withdrawal of the 2016 season.
“To be honest with you, if we take on this contract, we (the S.B.Y.B.S.L. board) are putting ourselves in a predicament that we are not prepared to make,” Gonzalez said to commissioners in reference to a newly proposed contract that was drawn up by City Manager Manuel De La Rosa and City Attorney Ricardo Moreno. “As a whole, this contract is not in the best interest of our staff, our volunteers and most importantly our players………..

Unlike Harlingen City government, the San Benito city government has not been helpful to the city’s youth. The Boys and Girls club is barely in existence, and now the youth baseball and softball programs are under attack.
