Two people died in a head-on collision last night off FM 509 where police say a vehicle was traveling in the wrong direction.

According to San Benito police, around 2:12 a.m. last night, officers responded to calls of a 2010 Mazda 4-door vehicle driving against traffic, south bound in the north bound lane.

When officers arrived, the Mazda had already collided with a 1992 white Dodge pick-up truck.

(UPDATE): The driver of the Mazda was identified as 30-year old Adriana Sosa of Pharr, while the male driver of the truck was identified as 58-year old Federico Montelongo of Harlingen.  Both were pronounced dead at the hospital.  A female passenger of the white pick-up truck identified as 47-year old Norma Balderama was transported to the hospital in critical condition but is now in stable condition, according to police.

One of the witnesses, Harlingen resident Ashley Donez, said she too was almost involved in the accident.  “I was coming up over a hill going towards the loop when I saw the headlights really close. I looked again and she was about 3 feet in front of me,” said Donez.  “Once I swerved and she passed me she was going so fast that my car shook. I’m surprised it took her that long to crash cause there were a few people behind me. Scared the heck out of me,” she added.

The accident is still under investigation.  No names are being released until all next of kin have been notified.
