A former San Benito High School graduate is currently in Cameron County Jail awaiting extradition on major felony drug charges from Louisiana. Samuel Barrera, 33, is being detained in County jail for Child Support violations, but also has an active warrant from the Denham Springs Police Department for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

According to the Public Information Office for the Denham Springs Police Department, two officers have already been assigned to pick up Barrera on Wednesday and bring him back to the city jail for booking before being transferred to Livingston Parish Detention Center in Livingston, Louisiana.

“We were able to collect enough evidence on him to issue an arrest warrant and have it go out to all the surrounding states,” said Denham Spring Public Information Officer Steve Kistler. “The fact that it was a felony committed in our community is what makes the trip to go get him worth it. Anytime we can get a felon off the streets, we go to all lengths to do that.”

Because of the nature of the crime, police officers handling the case said it was “possible” that federal agents would get involved. However, as of press time, it was unclear the exact amount of marijuana Barrera was attempting to distribute. According to federal law, the minimum amount of product would have to be over 100 pounds for federal agents to get involved in the case. The minimum punishment for intent to sell marijuana at the federal level is five years with up to a $250,000 fine.
