A San Benito High School security guard will be facing charges of possession of cocaine after a police officer arrested him for drunk driving Thursday afternoon.  Jesus Trevino, a 32-year-old security guard, who has been employed by the SBCISD for several years, was driving home from a friend’s house down the 100 block of North Regan when police got call of a “suspicious vehicle.”

According to a press release issued by the San Benito Police Department, Trevino was stopped because his vehicle matched the description of the one called in. When questioned by police, Trevino said he was just leaving a friend’s house that lived nearby. The officer suspected he was under the influence of alcohol as soon as Trevino started speaking. “Right away the officer could smell the alcohol on Mr. Trevino’s breath,” said SBPD detective Rogelio Banda. “In addition, the officer found an open container and the suspect admitted that he had a few beers prior to driving.”

After failing a field sobriety test, Trevino was asked to give a breath sample, but denied. Thanks to a recent law passed by the District Attorney, anybody who refuses a breath sample must submit to a mandatory blood test. Before Trevino was taken to the hospital for his blood work, officers took him to City Jail to be held on suspicion of drunk driving.

However, while Trevino was being booked into jail, officers were taking inventory of his possessions. That’s when Trevino got into even more trouble.

“The officers found a small clear plastic baggie that contained cocaine inside of his wallet,” said Banda.

Trevino was eventually charged with possession of a controlled substance, which is a State Jail Felony, in addition to his charge of DWI with an open container, which is a class B misdemeanor. The charge is expected to be bumped up to a felony DWI after the blood test comes back. He was arraigned and given bonds totaling $20,000 by Judge Ben Yudesis.

While the SBCISD would not give out any information regarding employees and could not confirm that Trevino worked for them, the San Benito resident did confirm to police that he was still employed by the District at the time of his arrest.  The District did issue this statement, “In regards to your inquiry about our staff member in question, the San Benito CISD can not provide details due to the fact that it involves a personnel matter.”
