Amidst whirling dust, honking horns, and sporting their vibrant orange vests, 15 local students ranging from ages fourteen to eighteen swept the sidewalks of Sam Houston Boulevard Thursday morning as a part of the City’s new beautification program. The program was first approved by the City Commission during the regular city meeting of June 16. And after gaining approval, the position was advertised to the community through social media and, “It was a hit!,” exclaimed City Manager Manuel Lara at this past Tuesday night’s meeting. The city received 90 applicants in total, 35 were chosen to be interviewed, and the top 10 were hired for the job. However, more than 10 students can be seen along downtown’s main strip, and that is because the Texas Work Force Commission has hired an additional 10 San Benito students for the 4-5 week program.
