CHANGING IT UP- School district realigns principals, two lose their title

The turmoil for San Benito CISD employees continued Tuesday night when the school board voted on some drastic changes for the coming year. Six employees were reassigned with four new principals being named.

According to a press release from Superintendent Dr. Marc A. Puig, “Every job responsibility within the organization must be matched to the person’s strengths and competencies. That’s the essence of these leadership changes.”

As a result of the changes, Dr. C.M. Cash Elementary saw Assistant Principal Dilia Cornett get bumped up to principal and Sullivan Elementary principal Jo Hushen moved schools to take over as principal at Miller Jordan Middle School. Also keeping the principal label while changing schools were Lupita Monsevalles who was transferred from Dr. Cash Elementary to Berta Cabaza Middle School and Ray Saldaña who moved from Berta Cabaza to take over at the Joe Callandret Positive Redirection Center.

In addition, two former principals lost their title as former Miller Jordan Principal Mary Alice Leal was moved to Assistant Principal at Berta Cabaza and Aracely Salinas went from Frank Roberts Elementary Principal to Landrum Elementary Academic facilitator.

Dr. Puig explained that the personnel changes have been made with the district’s best interest in mind, with each staff member placed in their new positions based on their leadership abilities. “Our district has staff members that are extremely experienced and talented. These personnel changes are being made with student success in mind so that our district and our campuses can continue moving forward and achieving even greater success,” Dr. Puig said.

The changes were recommended at the Tuesday night school board meeting by Dr. Puig and unanimously passed by the school board trustees. SBCISD school board member Hector Leal said he would rather not comment on the topic but noted, “I will say that this is all part of his three year plan, we trust in Dr. Puig and believe he knows what he’s doing.”

“We have entrusted these individuals to lead their campuses based on their unique strengths and leadership abilities.  We are excited about the future of our district and are eager to begin a new school year,” Dr. Puig said in the press release.

Attempts to contact Dr. Puig for additional information were made but no response was given as of press time.

I totally agree with your comments regarding the VMS article and the super ridiculous comments’. In my opinion the superintendent misled the community and terrified the staff to quit. We have lost several great professionals due to his political tactics. We have been played and a lot of people have been affected financially and lives ruined because of this superintendent. It’s very obvious his all about himself and cares about no one else and the scores and staffs moral reflects that directly.

The VMS reported in an interview with SBCISD Superintendent Puig that the SBCISD might be in a surplus going into this upcoming school year. Given the 300 or so employees projected to be cut hasn’t been close to being reached and no news on the self funded insurance/health plan, I can’t help but wonder where all the money was truly being wasted/spent on.

Another fact for the record is that we saw what the Huerta’s were all about and the election results show. The Huerta’s displayed no integrity and poor decision making. In addition, they have one back bone and are the joke of the town. The Tumberlsion clan has played a huge role in our district being were its at now, but their supporters and people that have gained from it will say other wise.. The Huerta’s will never get elected again..

    Dear Editor

This story is clearly from two weeks ago (June 12th is the date of posting). This edition is no longer able to be picked up at the local newsstand. The old editor’s policy was to make the whole story available once the issue the story appeared in was off of the newsstands. When did this policy change?

It would be nice to go back and read old articles in their entirety when new comments or events make them relevant again.

    Thanks.

Interesting how you mention political candidates that lost in your non sense post. You should focus on the board members that have served for their personal gain, and ruined our school district.. Don’t seat there an act ignorant, our district is a joke and they can all take credit for that. Now let’s talk about wannabe’s since you brought that up. I can only judge on wannabes that I’ve seen as public servants and you have several of them.. For example, joe, please, Oscar Medrano no job seriously, Anna Cruz all for self gain, Angel Mendes a joke, Michael Vargas wannabe politician…. Now there are your wannabe’s jake!!!!

I’d have to say what you posted, what you are in favor of by the lack of posting, and the reasoning behind you posting what you posted are far more LOL than the post you are referring to.

  4. I agree with all your comments but there’s a common factor here and that’s the characters that have made this happen. Our district is roughed up because political abuse has been going on your ten plus years between Tumberlinson’s political fractions and everyone else. The only continued disease in our district is the Tumberlinson support and their elected candidates continue to bury our district.. For example, all the political favors which equates to over staffing, giving people positions they are not qualified for, and protecting the superintendent and administration.. This is what has ruined our district and will continue.. I’m more than sure the FBI is looking into some of the shenanigans that have been going on in our district for years.. Our district is horrible and will continue as long as you have Tumberlison folks around..

Politics are politics – I do agree with you POINT. Timberlinson somehow someway is out and about for his own good. Both sides could be argued easily. But let’s call a spade a spade. If you are gonna hand out judgement on Tumberlinson, why not hand out the same judgement on Chuy, Ylianna, and the wannabee Pappas and his sidekick Garcia and all their cowpatty politics.

Chuy and Yilanna did more harm to this district in the time they were in power than Tumberlinson. I am only glad that the Huerta group finally saw Chuy and Yilana for what they really were! I am glad the people of SB finally voted them, yes them , out….. because Chuy was the puppet master.

Fact is the Huerta’s are self serving and only do what is beneficial and convenient for them. Fatima running against Yliana shows no integrity! There is no doubt in my mind that Fatima was coerced to run agains Yliana only for personal (perhaps financial) gain. Fatima only followed the foot steps of Ana as she too was once with Yliana and Fatima. They think that by forming alliances with Ana and Oscar, they will have a possibility of winning next time because i hear that Fatima and Julian are planning to run again. Seriously? The nerve of them! But let’s look towards the future and hope they dont run again

  5. I would like to add that I think we are headed in the right direction! Way to go, San Benito! Nothing but the best for us!

  6. Unfortunately there are some people who have no idea on how to run a school. They seem to think that a dictatorship is what it takes. Abuse of power is a cowardly act. Don’t you know you can get more bees with honey? Yes, it’s that simple! Once you start treating people like human beings, start appreciating and praising their efforts and accomplishments, and encouraging them instead of putting them down, you will see the seeds of YOUR efforts start flourishing. A teacher can be more productive when he/she feels supported and can work better in a relaxed atmosphere. The best teaching WILL NOT happen in a stressful, anxiety-filled atmosphere. PLEASE, TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM TREAT YOU! Yes, it’s THAT simple!

The test scores for this year are all below seventy percentile except for Science. This is not a problem that any administrator or educator can fix. The origin of this problem is the HOME…yes, the COMMUNITY OF SAN BENITO is at fault. As a child growing up, the PARENTS were the primary educator and the schools did the “fine tuning”. The schools simply were the academic “icing on the cake”. Not any more. The mind set of many parents today is a little twisted. The schools are to do EVERYTHING! That’s right…we brought ’em into the world; now you raise them. The public schools are at the breaking point. Teacher burn-out is on the rise.
Monies are dwindling. The social maladies of this little town are approaching the point of no return. That is when the TEA headhunters arrive.

I am glad that the district did as I recommended in past letters to the editor. Look at your lowest performing schools and change the principals. Usually those instructional leaders are not able to do the job unfortunately due to incompetence. Simply by looking at scores before the principal was there and after they have been at the helm for a few years can tell whether they are getting the job done or not. We do it for our football team why not be as picky when we are talking about a whole school?

The new organizational chart calls for three new created top level positions. Executive Director for Leadership, An Internal Auditor, and a Chief Financial Officer, plus a Business Manager. Also the position of Executive Director for Academics. Please post a copy of the new organizational chart approved. You cut teachers, but add central office staff?

Good Riddance! Its about time Leal was demoted; they should have not renewed her contract at all! I have worked under her and has no leadership skills whatsoever! She treated her employees unprofessionally, yet wanted us to treat her with respect. Its a two way street lady! Wish nothing but the best to Mrs. Hushen– I hear nothing but excellent things about you.
