AUSTIN—Some athletes are fine with just “showing up”
As his accomplishments show, San Benito junior John Belmares is not just any athlete.

At the Region-IV Class 6A meet in San Antonio two weekends ago, Belmares went out and proved just that as his shot put throw of 56-feet, 2-inches was the best in the region and garnered him gold.In the process, he became the first San Benito boys track & field athlete to make it state in quite some time.

Now, the Greyhound shot-putter will take that momentum to the UIL State Track & Field meet in Austin this weekend, as the state’s best tracksters invade Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.
