As hard as they worked on Tuesday night, the San Benito Lady ’Hounds were deserving of a quick game.
That came in the form of Friday night’s 15-0 shellacking of Brownsville Lopez at Lady Hound Field.
San Benito (15-1 overall, 5-0 in District 32-6A) had to work overtime on Tuesday, earning a gritty 1-0, nine-inning decision at Brownsville Veterans Memorial, but didn’t break a sweat against the Lady Lobos.
The Lady ’Hounds jumped on Lopez right away in the first inning as Stephanie Contreras, Kim Harper and Ali Huerta scored.
The bottom of the second inning was nightmarish for Lopez.
In all, San Benito erupted for 10 runs and batted around the order. Contreras and Harper each scored twice in the inning, Alexis Cavazos slapped a home run and Audrey Huerta, Ali Huerta, Mel Gonzalez, Joanna Gonzalez and Jav’ana Gonzalez all came home as the good times kept on rolling for the home team. A couple more runs ended the game via the mercy rule to send the Lobos home.
All the while, the Lady Hounds were efficient in the circle as well. Starter Crystal Castillo got a quick pitching session in, as the Lady ’Hounds ace tossed two scoreless inning, striking out the six Lopez batters she faced. Diandra Padilla came on in the third and struck out two of the three Lobos who stepped into the box. The two pitchers combined for a brief perfect game and struck out eight of the nine batters they faced.
With the easy victory, the Lady ’Hounds remained perfect in 32-6A district play and are all alone atop the district standings. Los Fresnos sits a game back while Harlingen South also has a loss on the ledger after it fell to Brownsville Hanna.
Next week, San Benito will take on those Harlingen South Lady Hawks on Tuesday at Dixieland Field in Harlingen. Then on Friday night, the Lady Hounds return home to face Brownsville Rivera to wrap up the first round of 32-6A district play.
