A Los Fresnos woman fell to her death from a 7-story balcony at Padre South Hotel at approximately 8 a.m. on Wednesday. The 21-year-old, identified as Nereida Cruz, was on the Island celebrating Spring Break for what is known as “Texas Week.” She was pronounced dead by Cameron County Justice of the Peace Bennie Ochoa. The fall is not believed to be alcohol related, but the death is still under investigation. Authorities believe Cruz slipped from the railing as she tried to adjust her balance.
Her death was one of three total fatalities on South Padre Island this week, including an Edinburg man whose decapitated body was found in the bay near the Convention Centre.
