After nearly three decades, the South Texas Youth Stock Show (STYSS) is cancelled, and the exact reason is being debated among STYSS directors and City of San Benito officials.

“We never received final approval from the City,” said STYSS Director of Operations Kathy Rike, “whether we could hold the event at the fairgrounds. We were going through Martha McClain.” McClain is the City’s public relations coordinator.

Rike further said STYSS directors “were originally of the understanding that we were already approved … and (just) needed to take necessary steps to notify them of our dates in 2015.” Rike said they first “contacted (the City) in May 2014, but didn’t hear anything. We contacted them again back in August … We still didn’t hear.”

McClain expressed that this was not the case and stated she was more than willing to accommodate the group and provide them with their requests in a timely fashion. McClain provided official e-mail documentation supporting her statements.
