Let’s take a look at where God was leading Moses. There was much more than meets the eye. Not only was he being led back to the place he fled as a fugitive, he was going to subsequently lead the people to the very promised land of God!
“Go and gather the elders of Israel together, and say to them, ‘The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared to me, saying, “I have surely visited you and seen what is done to you in Egypt; and I have said I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, to a land flowing with milk and honey.” (Exodus 3:16-17 NKJV)
Wow! Can you believe it? The one who left 40 years earlier as a murder, as number one on Pharaoh’s Most Wanted List, this same one was going to lead the nation out of bondage and affliction! Then by the mercy of God he was going to lead them to a land flowing with milk and honey! God’s restoration in Moses’ life was complete. Now he was being trusted with the two-prong purpose of God for all the people of Israel.
Remember that before Moses could be led back to Egypt he had to first be led into the desert. It took one day, one bad choice, one irrational moment to ruin God’s initial plan of deliverance for his people through Moses. God had to lead him into the desert to correct him first so he could be re-trained. It was a process that took 40 years. It was a journey of discipline and instruction. Why? It was so that Moses could be prepared for the return trip, which had a double purpose.
I believe it is important for us to remember that when God leads us away from what we know is our purpose during a season of correction it is to give us a double portion of His Spirit for the work that lies ahead. We never see God giving up on the ones He calls. We do that to each other in our fallen humanity, but you never see God do that in the Bible.
“Then they will heed your voice; and you shall come, you and the elders of Israel, to the king of Egypt; and you shall say to him, ‘The LORD God of the Hebrews has met with us; and now, please, let us go three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.” (Exodus 3:18 NKJV).
This verse is amazing. You do not see The Lord saying to Moses, “They will remind you of your sin. They will remind you of your failure. They will tell you why they will not go with you.” Instead, He said to Moses, “…they will heed your voice.” What is even more compelling is that God never brings up Moses’ past. He does not start the conversation at the burning bush with, “You know, we would not have had to go through this if you hadn’t murdered that Egyptian. Why didn’t you do what I said? If you would have just obeyed me then none of this would have happened.”
God led him up the mountain to meet with him in spite of his past. That is good news for all of us! God led him up the mountain to spend time with him! This is very important. Has God led you into a place of correction and discipline? If so, be encouraged! If you heed his instructions and his corrections, this will be a time of preparation so that a double portion of God’s Spirit can rest on you for the two-prong assignment that lies ahead of your life! God has not given up on you! After He delivers you He will use you to help deliver others and bring them into a place of promise!
That is where God leads!
