When we arrive at the place where God has sent us what do we say to the people there? I’m here – Hello! Didn’t God tell you I was coming? He told me to come so I came! He sent me, so why aren’t you ready to receive me?
As a person who responded to the call of God I can tell you that this response is not too far from reality. We arrive with excitement at our God-given destination and assignment. Then reality sets in. Will the people receive me? Will the people respond to the call of God on my life? Do they even want to know or hear from the One who sent me?
God’s destiny for us and for the people that receive us is birthed spiritually in the place where He leads us. In order for that to happen we have to have an awareness and acceptance of Who our God is. “Then Moses said to God, ‘Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, “The God of your fathers has sent me to you,” and they say to me, “What is His name?” what shall I say to them?’ And God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’ And He said, ‘Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, “I AM has sent me to you.” (Exodus 3:13-14 NKJV).
As Christians we have to be prepared to give an answer to the question of Who has called us. I was asked repeatedly, as I am even now: why are you here? Who told you to come to the Rio Grande Valley to pioneer and plant a church? My wife and I are not from here. We have no immediate friends or family here. I have been asked, “Are you sure it was God that told you to do this?”
“Moreover God said to Moses, ‘Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: “The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.” (Exodus 3:15 NKJV). I had to be able to answer with surety and confidence that God led us to minister in this region. It is important that Christians have the clear, identifying understanding of Who God is when we arrive where His Spirit leads.
“Go and gather the elders of Israel together, and say to them, ‘The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared to me, saying, “I have surely visited you and seen what is done to you in Egypt; and I have said I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, to a land flowing with milk and honey.” (Exodus 3:16-17 NKJV).
The place that God leads us to will always have a specific call and function. He gives us a specific message for the people of the region. He wants us to make clear why He has sent us there. Do you know why God has sent you to the place where you are serving? It could be your job, school, a new neighborhood, new friends, new family relationships, or where you shop and buy your groceries. Why are you in front of them? What has He given you to say?
“Then they will heed your voice; and you shall come, you and the elders of Israel, to the king of Egypt; and you shall say to him, ‘The LORD God of the Hebrews has met with us; and now, please, let us go three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.” (Exodus 3:18 NKJV). Part of what we are to do is to offer an invitation to worship the Lord together. Know your message. Then you will be able to know the people.
