Abel Moreno Jr., the new coach for the Lady Greyhounds varsity basketball team at San Benito High School, has high hopes for the girls.
Previously, Moreno was at Brownsville Rivera for six years before replacing Clarisse Arredondo as the Lady ’Hounds hoops coach. Prior to that, Moreno spent time at Porter High School.
“San Benito already has a legacy of being in the playoffs,” Moreno said, adding that the team has yet to reach the “next level” of achievement. “They’ve never gone beyond the second round,” he added.
That’s all something Moreno plans to change soon, and his longterm goal is to build a tradition of girls basketball excellence in San Benito.
Moreno also said that while he enjoyed coaching in Brownsville, the move to San Benito will afford him more opportunities to build players “from the ground up.”
Taking advantage of San Benito being a one-high school district, Moreno seeks to start building programs for the lower grade levels.
Moreno said, “There is a lot of good talent in San Benito. The climate is good. The girls participate; there are a lot of girls in the program.”
“Hopefully by the end of the year,” he added, “We’re at a playoff run (eventually) showing that we can be a third and fourth round playoff team.”
