Bobcats logoRIO HONDO – The Rio Hondo Bobcats forced the Raymondville Bearkats to swallow their second loss of the season last night, while their own record remained flawed by only one loss. Though the Bobcats had hiccups at times, the Bobcat-Bearkat brawl ended with a final tally of a 27-13 in favor of Rio Hondo.

The game began with Raymondville receiving the ball. Slowly trickling down the field, the Bearkat drive seemed promising. The Kats just couldn’t finish with a touchdown, though, and turned the ball over on downs to the Bobcats, who would score soon after that.

With 2:45 remaining in the first quarter, senior running back Marco Garate found his way into the endzone to create a Rio Hondo lead of 6-0 (extra point no good).

After Raymondville gained possession for the second time that night, they were still unable to reap points from their efforts. With 0:48 left, the Kats handed the ball back over to Rio Hondo, who didn’t score again before the end of the first quarter.

The Bobcats started out with the ball in the second quarter, but their drive came to an abrupt end after Leonard Santana of the Kats intercepted with 10:46 left on the clock. In the midst of a hopeful Bearkat run, Rio Hondo gave Raymondville a taste of their own medicine.

With 8:37 left in the half, the Bobcats got a pick six, and this time their extra point was good. Stretching their advantage over the Kats, Rio Hondo was now leading 13-7.

Next, Raymondville rolled out onto offense once again and battled back against their Bobcat counterparts. With 3:03 left before halftime, a Bearkat touchdown and extra point adjusted the scoreboard to read 13-7, leaving the Kats trailing by only six points.

Some more action would occur before the end of the first half, including an interception by Rio Hondo’s own Michael Carrizales, but the score would not change again until the second half.

The start of the third quarter was scoreless, but Rio Hondo eventually escaped their short scoring drought after Garate struck again, making the score 19-7. An extra point pushed the Bobcat lead up to 20-7. Things slowed down again after that, and neither team scored for the remainder of the quarter.

Although the Kats still exhibited the desire to win, the final quarter sealed Raymondville’s fate after Rio Hondo scored again with 5:46 left in the game. With a successful kick, the Bobcats had built a towering lead over the Bearkats.

After a final Bearkat touchdown before the end of the game, the final tally remained 27-13 in favor of Rio Hondo (3-1 in District 16-4A, Division II).
