Rey Avila, president of the Texas Conjunto Music Hall of Fame & Museum, is preparing for the organization’s second annual Squeezebox Boom 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk. The event is set for Saturday, Nov. 1.
His excitement for the upcoming event shines through as he explains the history of the route he and the organizers have set for the run.
This year, the 5K will take participants through the historic Palo Blanco Gardens subdivision.
Along the way, they will see about 20 two-story duplexes built by the federal government in 1952 to house the families of officers stationed at the Harlingen Air Force Base, according to Avila.
The base closed in 1962 and many of the houses are still standing.
Those homes were then sold to the general public. According to Avila, it is his understanding that some of those homes still belong to the original owners.
As for the run and walk, Avila said there are already runners coming in from all parts of the Valley: Edinburg, Weslaco, Olmito, Harlingen and Los Fresnos.
Last year’s top runner was 16-year-old Juan Carlos Sandoval of Harlingen. He completed the 5K in 18 minutes and 55 seconds.
The deadline to pre-register is Monday, Oct. 20. There will be on-site registration, but free shirts are only available to those who preregister online at mve.webconnex.com/sanbenito5k/walk. Those wanting more information can contact Rey Avila at (956) 245-1666.
